Long Day, Short Post

It is 10 pm and I’ve been up since approximately 5 am this morning. So far today, I have:

  • Organized rubrics and peer reviews to give back to my 8 am class. I only got the peer reviews done. Grading has to wait.
  • Printed out and organized materials for my 8 am class activity (identifying topics as fact, value or policy based and choosing an appropriate organizational pattern for them).
  • Taught my 8 am class (activity went well, attendance was horrible – I had five out of my class of 23 there…I am going to do some research on reducing absenteeism for next semester, because this is ridiculous).
  • Listened to a makeup speech by a student who has too high of anxiety to present to the class. But, she missed the actual class this morning. Sigh…
  • Did a Zoom with my online public speaking class that is a high school dual enrollment class. Love these students! I wish I was working with them in person.
  • Had ChatGPT help me to plan class for my Argumentation and Advocacy where we were setting the legislative agenda for our Student Congress debates that start next week. It was definitely helpful. Printed out half sheets for students to write brief descriptions of their legislation and post on the wall for a gallery walk and voting.
  • Came home to get colorful sticky dots for the agenda setting activity, but I couldn’t find them, so I had to go to CVS and get post-it flags.
  • Got to campus and found a parking space at the last possible moment (thank goodness).
  • Taught both my sections of Argumentation and Advocacy. The activity was really fun and the students came up with some really interesting legislation to debate. Here are our agendas from both classes:
  • Headed to my FYE office and started working on contacting people who we picked to be interviewed for our Administrative position (I am the hiring committee chair), but got sidetracked with some questions about the process and need to wait until tomorrow to call people.
  • Went to our large on-campus event – Town Hall Meeting – and got to talk to some people I had not seen in a while from around town and met some new people.
  • Went to the campus adjacent pizza place and picked up our pizza order for our student employees working the event. Here is a photo from campus before it started raining lightly again. I love our campus.
  • The event went well, but didn’t finish until 8:40 pm. I got a few emails done in that time, but am feeling very behind still.
  • Cleaned up a bit and came home.
  • And now, I’m heading to bed!

I am happy to be done with this extremely long day and pleased with the way the event went and happy with my classes. So, overall, great day that lasted way, way too long. Good night all!

I think it felt even longer because of the time change. The early darkness really throws me for a while!

Sounds fun to me! I direct public speaking, but I am not usually in the classroom, and I really do miss it. I love seeing students talk about their passions.

I think I would miss the classroom quite a bit. I love my job as Director of FYE, but doing just that would make me feel disconnected. Do you get to work with graduate TAs at least?
