This wasn’t a typical Wednesday. I didn’t go to campus, didn’t run a meeting, and didn’t rush through lunch on my way to the next thing. But in its own quiet way, this Wednesday still had a rhythm—and a whole lot of checkboxes.
During the school year, Wednesdays start a little later for me because I teach a class for our FYE student employees that runs until 6 p.m. That later start makes it the perfect day for a home reset. And even though I’m not on campus right now, the tradition stuck: Wednesday was chore day.
🧺 Chores, Chores, Chores
- Laundry: We’re heading out for a two-week trip this weekend, so all the clothes must be clean and packed. Plus, I want to leave clean bedding for our pet sitter—because hospitality doesn’t stop when you’re on vacation.
- Trash Day: Another reason I love a Wednesday reset—the garbage truck comes! It feels satisfying to literally take out the trash.
- Dishwasher Olympics: Loaded and conquered.
- Grading: I am this close to being done. (If I say that out loud, maybe I’ll actually finish tonight?)
💚 Girl Scouts & Growing Up
One bittersweet project today was working on my daughter’s new Girl Scout vest. This will be her final one—her Ambassador years are here—and I’m determined to make it perfect. She’s earned a mountain of badges, and I’m using a trick another GS mom shared with me – flat iron for hair! Works great at the edges with the iron-on patches/badges. We’ll see if that continues when we get further from the edge. I wish I was a seamstress, but alas, I am not.
We had to get her a second CSA (Cadette, Senior, Ambassador) vest because, well, in 7th grade she was tiny and I thought she might stay that way forever. Spoiler: she didn’t. Growth spurts are sneaky like that. This vest marks the end of an era and, hopefully, the beginning of some very photogenic memories.
💤 Not Sleeping Great
Thanks, menopause. I’ve recently started a new vitamin/supplement combo and I’m really hoping it kicks in soon because averaging five hours of sleep a night is not the vibe. If you’ve got menopause sleep tips, I’m all ears. No, seriously—drop them in the comments…please!
📚 Big Library Haul
I swung by the library today and every book I had on hold came in at once. Obviously. I’ll be bringing a few of these on our trip, where I’ll be reading in the sun while my daughter and husband attend debate camp. Here’s what’s in my tote:
The Garden of Small Beginnings by Abbi Waxman A sweet, emotional story set in LA (which happens to be where we’re going).

Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure can help fight inequality, polarization, and the decline of civic life by Eric Klinenberg This is more of a work book, but I am also personally interested in finding ways to decrease inequality and polarization. I’m interested to hear what he has to say.

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro Sherlock’s great-great-great granddaughter solving mysteries in Connecticut? Yes please.

Musical Chairs by Amy Poeppel Might read, might not. I’m taking recommendations if you’ve read it! Let me know in the comments!

Delay, Don’t Deny: Living an Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle by Gin Stephens Mix and Match Mama convinced me I need to read more about intermittent fasting, and this one has a friendly tone with science to back it up.

How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell A gentle nudge toward digital detoxing and living more intentionally offline. Summer goals.

(P.S. If you’re buying books instead of borrowing, I love using ThriftBooks. You can join their Reading Rewards program: https://www.thriftbooks.com/share/?code=CcA%252fit%252bmgy0mdBTJaKfH0w%253d%253d and we’ll both get a reward book! #ShareBookLove)
⚾The Wind Down
Now, it’s baseball time (Go Giants!), a quick McDonald’s ice cream run with my daughter to celebrate her last serious final, and fingers crossed for an early bedtime—and maybe even a solid six hours of sleep. A girl can dream – hopefully!
